Escort Driver Steersman / Trailer Mate

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are seeking a motivated and flexible Escort Driver – Steersman / Trailer Mate to join our team. This is a manual position and involves the use of semi-skilled equipment operation working in all Collett & Sons depot yards, dockside and construction sites as required, meeting the needs of the business.
SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertake Escort Driver duties, including steering all mechanical and hydraulic rear-steer trailers to ensure the safe delivery of components on fleet vehicles, trailers and associated plant items.
- Operate, drive, load, offload and mobilize all types of hydraulic trailers.
- Assist with configuration of trailer fleet and complete daily checks of all vehicles and/or plant equipment in your care.
- Support LGV drivers in loading, lashing and securing loads at collection points and removal of lashings and unloading at designated offloading areas.
- Occasionally supervise temporary help participating in work activities.
- Complete daily checks of all plant equipment in your care.
- Learn storekeeping practices and procedures applicable to storage yard operations in depots and dockside storage.
- Operate hydraulic trailers, self-propelled trailers.
- Assist in setting up and demobilising clamp trailers, along with operation of clamp trailers on site.
- Act as trailer banksman/steersman/attendant for other Abnormal Indivisible Loads (AILs) using extendable/steerable trailer equipment.
- Use equipment such as electric generators, hoses, battery chargers, compressors, power pumps, lifting equipment, forklift trucks and miscellaneous hand tools.
- Maintain a safe working environment in yard/work area and clear spillages of loose goods (e.g., oil, sand).
- Perform any other duties required to ensure effective management of the business.
Essential Criteria
- Full clean driving license.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Effective communicator with excellent organizational, literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ability to operate hydraulic and/or mechanical equipment.
- Ability to work as a part of a team and demonstrate flexibility and professionalism, representing the company in front of the client base while on assignment and in uniform.
- Experience with hydraulic modular trailers transporting abnormal and/or heavy haulage.
- Previous experience within the Logistics, Road Haulage, or Heavy Lifting industry.
- This is a physically demanding job at times; a good level of personal fitness and strength is required.
- Availability to work away from base at short notice for long and short periods of time, coping with unconventional working patterns.
- Willingness to work evenings, overtime and additional weekends as required by business needs.
- Some knowledge of the care and safe operation of assigned loading equipment.
- Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
Desirable Criteria
- Forklift truck license.
- Mechanical trade qualifications.
- Previous experience working with hydraulic and/or mechanical equipment.
Location & Conditions
The role is based out of our depots at either our Halifax, Goole or Grangemouth depot, but flexibility and mobility is required to carry out the task at our other depots and areas of work as dictated by the business needs.
Flexibility is essential, as overtime, evening and weekend working may be required by the demands of the business.
