NEW 150 TONNE GIRDER FRAME TRAILER COMPLETES FIRST TRANSFORMER DELIVERY

Collett 150 Tonne girder frame trailer loaded and departing Ellesmere Port for transformer delivery

The latest addition to our heavy transport fleet, 150 Tonne girder frame trailer, has successfully completed its first transformer delivery.

This latest trailer is the third of its kind to join our specialist heavy transport fleet, alongside the existing 250 Tonne and 550 Tonne models. Paired with EuroCombi modular axles, it provides a versatile, lightweight configuration ideal for transporting heavy cargo in the power transmission and distribution sector.

Our in-house mechanical team fully refurbished and serviced the trailer before it returned to the road, ready for demanding project work.

Port Operations & Girder frame transport

The transformer, manufactured by Hyosung and measuring 7.75m (L) x 4.4m (W) x 4.5m (H), was received at Ellesmere Port, with all port operations falling under Collett’s scope of work. Directly unloaded from the vessel using a Leibherr LTM 1800(D) crane, it was secured into the new girder frame trailer for onward transport.

Later that week, in line with the project delivery schedule, the 61-metre-long convoy departed the port for the 110-mile journey to site. The specialist route, carefully planned and managed by our Projects and Consulting team, combined motorway stretches with technically challenging sections of the local road network. These included narrow lanes, tight turns and areas with restricted clearances, all of which required precise manoeuvring and close coordination between the transport crew, escort vehicles and local authorities. The two-day journey was supported by West Mercia police escorts and our in-house escort fleet.

Planning, Coordination & Infrastructure Support

Comprehensive preparation was essential for the safe and efficient completion of the project. Given the challenging route and overall convoy length, our Projects and Consulting team carried out a detailed route survey, including swept path analysis at multiple locations. This process identified the need for significant street furniture removal to facilitate the movement of the load.

Ironbridge Substation, located within the former Ironbridge Power Station site in Shropshire, is part of a major redevelopment following the power station’s decommissioning in 2015. As part of a broader upgrade to regional electrical infrastructure, the substation plays a vital role in supporting power distribution to the surrounding area and future developments. Collett & Sons continues to provide major infrastructure support to these strategic projects, reaffirming its position as a trusted partner in complex heavy transport and installation operations.
